Thursday’s announcement from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Scholastic affects the company’s Shake Look Touch book. Nearly 186,000 of the books were sold for $3, with the vast majority purchased in the United States.

The book, which is intended for young children, comes with materials that extend from it, a potential danger. The CPSC said that pom-poms attached to the book can and have become disconnected, creating a choking hazard for small children.

Scholastic issued the voluntary safety recall after learning of two separate instances in which the pom-poms came free from the book. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries, according to the CPSC.

The recalled children’s books were sold between January 2020 and April 2022 across the country in several bookstores and on several prominent websites, including BarnesandNoble.com, HomeGoods.com and Books-a-Million.com.

The CPSC and Scholastic advise parents and caregivers to take the books away from children as soon as possible, remove the pom-poms and then apply for a $10 gift card.

To qualify for the card, parents will need to take a photo of the modified book to verify that the pom-poms have been removed. Finally, they should register at recallrrt.com/slt and submit the photograph. Parents must also affirm that they are throwing out the pom-poms so they will no longer pose a hazard to children.

Once those steps have been completed, parents should receive an e-gift card for $10 within three to five business days, according to Scholastic’s website.

The gift card is being offered in place of a refund and a replacement for the book. After the pom-poms have been detached from the book, children can go back to using the product, according to Scholastic.

While the recall may affect thousands of books, Scholastic said it is an infrequent occurrence.

“This situation is rare. At Scholastic, your child’s safety is our highest concern. Our products are tested to exacting safety standards before being offered for sale,” a message on Scholastic’s website said.

Customers who purchased the book to give to someone else are encouraged to inform the recipient about the recall, Scholastic said.

In a statement sent to Newsweek, Scholastic reiterated its commitment to safety, saying the voluntary recall was done out of an abundance of caution.

The statement also clarified that the recall “does not impact Shake Look Touch books that do not have pom poms or other Scholastic books.”

The Scholastic children’s book isn’t the only consumer product that has been recalled recently.

In June, the CPSC announced a recall of thousands of nest swing egg chairs after a number of injuries were reported. Some users of the suspended chair said it caused cuts, scrapes and soreness, and there were also reports of broken ribs and even a collapsed lung. Others said the chair collapsed or tipped over while in use.
